Imbari Towels

Bathing (Onsen) is an integral part of Japanese social activity forming a foundation of wellness. Textile products associated with bathing play an important role in the ritual and are prized for their quality and longevity.

Towels have been continuously produced in the Imabari Shi prefecture of Japan for over 120 years.

Today there are almost 200 factories that twist yarn, dye yarn and fabricate towels.

Underground water from the Sojagawa River is used in the production, the soft water has very few impurities, adding to the softness of the towels.

There are important artisanal skills in each production step including yarn handling, weaving, dye composition, and the unique Sakizarashi Sakizome (dyeing strings first) technique.

Completing each step with care and dedication is the mark of an Imbari towel.

The Boroughs has a limited collection of bathing textiles from Japan, check instore or here for availability.
