Northcote Pennant

In 1839 Northcote began as as land sale and became a township in 1859. Like much of inner Melbourne the Gold Rush of the 1850's transformed and gentrified the area. But life in Northcote wasn't all for the hoity-toity as the suburb was home to many slaughterhouses, piggeries and claypits. One of those clay pits became the Northcote Patent Brick Works, and the connection with clay continues to this day as Northcote is part of the ceramics revolution that has swept inner Melbourne, as it is home to the Northcote Pottery.
