On the outer rim of inner Melbourne is Preston. Like many of the inner city suburbs, its inception came about in a land sale in the late 1830's. About this time it was known as Irishtown, Aboriginals still camped on the Darebin Creek and the only way to get there was on a wagonette from Bourke Street. Things have changed, gone are the flour mills and pottery works and much of the textile manufacturing that the inner North was home to until the late 1980's. Like the rest of Melbourne (and Australia) growth, prosperity and cultural expansion came with migration. Thankfully we can still enjoy the diversity that this created with food being the obvious enduring legacy.
