Named after a reservoir built in 1864 to service the city it didn't become a suburb until the 1920's - much later than other areas of inner Melbourne. The reservoir was a symbol of Melbourne's growing confidence and modernisation and one of the largest water storages in the world. Like the rest of inner Melbourne's north, Resi, grew from manual craft industries like tanning and pottery and was transformed with post-war migration into a suburb that boasted a huge Greek and Italian population.
